Wunderbar! All Quiet wins Best Pic

The International Catholic Film Critics Association has named All Quiet on the Western Front (Im Westen Nichts Neues) the Best Picture of 2022 at its annual Catholic Film Critics Awards.

The group’s unique and second-most prestigious award went to Thirteen Lives, winner of the Human and Gospel Values Award.

Five awards went to The Banshees of Inisherin, the most of any film this year. Todd Field through broke its dominance to claim Best Director for Tár, as did Cate Blanchett for Best Actress. The two films split all of the four acting awards.

All Quiet ended up with just the one award, but it was the most coveted one. It is the first time a film has won Best Picture without any other wins. In German, it’s also the first foreign-language film to win.

The Banshees of Inisherin also had the most nominations with eight. Tár, Top Gun: Maverick, and The Menu each began the campaign with five nominations. Only The Menu went home with no wins, as Top Gun: Maverick took Best Cinematography for its aerial attack action.

For the first time in the ICFCA’s short history, two nominees tied for an award. Kate O’Hare and Joe McAleer both received the same number of winning votes in the honor for Criticism, ICFCA Member. Meanwhile, the membership voted Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian as the year’s top critic overall.

Had traditional voting governed the Best Picture process, Top Gun would have added the prize to its Best Cinematography win. But after three rounds of instant runoff, All Quiet had the majority that Top Gun never quite reached.

The awards season started with nomination voting on January 11 and closed a week later. Members could cast winners’ ballots as early as February 24. The deadline was March 3.
