An Officer of the Order of Australia, Emeritus Professor Peter W. Sheehan AO writes as film critic for the Australian Catholic Office for Film and Broadcasting and member of SIGNIS. He has greatly influenced decisions on film censorship in Australia as chair of the national Board of Review. His academic career has spanned the globe and culminated in the role of president of Australian Catholic University, where he served from 1998-2008.

He was made an Officer of the Order of Australia in 1995 for his services to psychology and education and received the Centenary Medal from the Australian government in 2003. Several universities have appointed him to their faculty, including the University of Sydney, the University of Pennsylvania, the City University of New York, the University of New England (Armidale, Australia), and the University of Queensland.

Berlin, Montréal, Setubal (Portugal), and Karlovy Vary (Czech Republic) have each appointed him to serve on their international film festival juries. In addition, he has chaired the Australian Commonwealth’s Film Board of Review, which is the body responsible for final decisions about film censorship in Australia.

Many organizations have elected or named Professor Sheehan president or chair: the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia, the International Congress of Psychology, the Australian Psychological Society, the Queensland Catholic Education Commission, the Consultative Committee of the Australian Academies, the Australian Academy of the Social Sciences, the Research Committee of the Australian Research Council, and the Australian Research Grants Committee.

As author or co-author, Professor Sheehan has published several books, research monographs, and research articles in psychology. He studied for both his bachelors and PhD (psychology) at the University of Sydney.
